I am a married man

Thanks to all of you who made it to the wedding.  I hope you all had a good time.  Tomorrow we are off to Ireland for a couple of weeks to celebrate our marriage in the cool Irish air.  Oh, and to drink a lot of Guinness.

My Goodness My Guinness!

Thunderstorm

A great thunderstorm rolled through earlier providing some excellent light, and even a double rainbow.  Meghann took some great pictures out back including this one:

This is also a good time to link to my new flickr photostream.  Bookmark http://www.flickr.com/photos/imsmi/ to see photos that Meg and I have recently taken.

Elitist Mumbo Jumbo

I guess there has been hellfire raining down on Obama over a comment he made about jobless people being bitter.  McCain and the re-pubs have been blasting him including my favorite republican, Hillary.  As the following breakdown illustrates, the "elitist" pejorative being slung at Obama is certainly a case of pot meet kettle.

Who's calling who elitist?

100 Greatest Opening Lines

American Book Review has a list of the hundred best opening lines from novels.

The top ten:

1. Call me Ishmael. —Herman Melville, Moby-Dick (1851)

2. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. —Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (1813)

3. A screaming comes across the sky. —Thomas Pynchon, Gravity's Rainbow (1973)

4. Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice. —Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967; trans. Gregory Rabassa)

5. Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. —Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita (1955)

6. Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. —Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina (1877; trans. Constance Garnett)

7. riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs. —James Joyce, Finnegans Wake (1939)

8. It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. —George Orwell, 1984 (1949)

9. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. —Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities (1859)

10. I am an invisible man. —Ralph Ellison, Invisible Man (1952)

Other notables:

15. The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new. —Samuel Beckett, Murphy (1938)

21. Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. —James Joyce, Ulysses (1922)

Gotta love the Irish writers.

If you haven't already guessed

The previous post was my elaborate April fools prank.  Surprisingly my mom was very calm and supportive.  "Everybody has them these days," is what she said.  As for the butterfly, I thought that it would be a give away but apparently I must be a butterfly kinda guy because almost everyone bought it.  It could just have easily been a bad ass skull with a snake crawling through it:

I Finally Did It!!!

I finally got that butterfly tattoo that I have always wanted.  Meghann was mad because she thinks it is girly, but I like it.  It represents my metamorphosis from the larval stage.  Sorry Mom.

New Features

I've added some new features to the site via upgrading to Subtext 1.9.5 (finally).

On the left hand side, there are several new features:
  • A search box that displays results dynamically on the page.
  • A "tag cloud" that let's me tag entries with different keywords.
  • and finally I can list links of sites that I enjoy.
You'll also notice that when you post a comment you will now be asked to enter a code that is displayed in an image file in the page.  This is known as a Captcha and will help prevent spam.

Another feature in the comment area is the use of identicons and gravatars.  Identicons are programmatically generated images that are made from your IP address, so provided you visit from the same IP, the image next to your comment will always be the same.

If you want your own image to appear next to your post, use a Gravatar.  Gravatars are "Globally Recognized Avatars" and require you to create an account here, where you can upload an image that is associated with your email address.  Every time you post on a site that uses gravatars, the same image will appear next to your comment.  I'll post an example comment on this page so you can see my avatar.   I should also note that entering your email address on my site is private, and the email will never be displayed.

I hope you enjoy my new features.
